Company History

Jay Owens always had an interest in carpentry and construction. He was a young and energetic school teacher with a new family who wanted to start a business in construction.

He was traveling through a small community in Birmingham and “it” finally clicked. He saw an older gentleman installing a fence at a home and he felt that the fence trade was his calling. He asked the gentleman if he could follow him around to a few projects to learn more and the gentleman obliged. Soon thereafter, O. Jay Fence Company was founded. Initially working out of an older model car by himself after school, on the weekends, and during school breaks, Jay soon acquired a flatbed truck and a small crew of employees. Like any other fledgling small business, times were extremely tough in the beginning until the test of time and the hand of God soon led O. Jay Fence Company to success. During these tough times, the company's guiding principles were forged:

“No job is too small”
“We build anything from dog houses to Churches”
“Where one job ends another job begins”
“Treat others like you want to be treated”
“No job is complete until the customer is satisfied”
“We not only build fences. We build relationships”
“There are three kinds of people in the world, those who want things to happen, those who make things happen, and those who wondered what happened”

Strict adherence to these guiding principles and a devout faith in God has allowed O. Jay Fence Company to flourish for nearly fifty years.
